The Coroner
In the following circumstances the doctor may report the death to the
coroner :
- An accident or injury
- An industrial disease
- During a surgical operation
- Before recovery from an anesthetic
- If the cause of death is unknown
- If the death was sudden and unexplained, for instance, a sudden infant
death (cot death)
- If the deceased own doctor had not seen him/her either after the death, or
within 14 days before the death
The procedure following this will either be:
- No action is taken by the Coroner and the doctor is free to issue
a death certificate as usual.
- The Coroner decides to carry out a post mortem. If there is a post
mortem a doctors death certificate will not be needed as the Coroner
will send all the necessary documentation to the registrar.
- The Coroner decides to carry out an inquest and post mortem. If an
inquest is deemed necessary then you will not need to register the death
at all, the Coroner will do this for you once the inquest has been closed
